Jered Weaver Is Mr. Guts 2010

With his record hovering around .500 and the Angels seemingly unable to gain any ground on the Rangers in the division, there’s literally no chance for Jered Weaver to win the Cy Young award this season. However, the Angels ace is definitely worthy of some type of recognition.

Sure, he earned his first trip to the All-Star Game earlier this summer, but he didn’t get to pitch in the game.  And with the Angels struggling to stay in the playoff race, Weaver hasn’t gotten many opportunities to showcase his stuff on national television, and that’s a shame.

So since there is no official award from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America that Weaver can win this season, I’m going to make one up.  Let’s call it the Mr. Guts award.

Weaver Is A Hometown All-Star Snub

Even though the MLB All-Star game is nothing more than a glorified exhibition--despite World Series home-field advantaged being determined by the outcome--players take selection to the Midsummer's Classic very seriously.  In fact, most players probably care more about being selected to the team than the actual outcome of the game, especially those not likely to make the playoffs.

Besides just about every player having some sort of All-Star Game incentive in their contracts--Torii Hunter picked up an extra cool $100k for his 4th selection--the real reason guys want to make the team is to be recognized as one of the game's best.  Call it pride, ego or both, but every player wants to feel elite.

The problem, however, is that not every All-Star caliber player makes the All-Star Game roster.

Jered Weaver Named Special Olympics Ambassador

Long Beach, Calif., Feb. 24, 2010 -- Jered Weaver has been named a Sports Ambassador for Special Olympics Southern California. The 27-year-old Angel pitcher has been a supporter of Special Olympics since his days competing at California State
University, Long Beach.

The mission of Special Olympics is to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities through sport and competition. As a Sports Ambassador, Weaver will participate in Special Olympics events, including the annual Summer Games and a softball clinic; be featured in Special Olympics PSAs; and provide autographed items for silent auctions.

A Southern California native, Weaver is always ready to give back to the community.

“Everyone should have an opportunity to play sports, and Special Olympics offers that to a group of people who are often excluded from sports activities,” said Weaver. “I’m happy that I can help to spread the word about a great organization like Special Olympics Southern California and how sports can change the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.”
